Campus Fraud Reporting Process

Buffalo State's Internal Control Program seeks to ensure that activities carried out at the college comply with all Federal and State laws and SUNY and Buffalo State policies and procedures.  All members of the campus community are expected to promptly report any known or suspected fraud, waste, or abuse in violation of law or policy.

A variety of situations may be considered fraud; some examples are:

  • Theft of materials or assets involving college employees
  • Misuse of computing, information, and record systems
  • Conflicts of interest
  • Gifts and entertainment activity involving college employees.
  • Misuse of grant or contracting funds.
  • Forgery or alteration of documents.

The Office of the State Comptroller, Office of Operations, has presented on Fraud Red Flags to alert state employees to warnings signs of fraudulent activities, including examples of fraudulent documents.

If you suspect fraud, waste, abuse, or irregular activities within the college, we encourage you to contact us immediately. You may contact the Internal Control Officer or Internal Control Coordinator, or another member of the Internal Control Working Committee.  All contacts will be handled confidentially to the extent possible and permitted by law.  Retaliation against anyone who has made a report in good faith under this process is strictly prohibited.  If false allegations are made, they may result in disciplinary action against the reporter.

  • When possible, please be prepared to provide the following information:
  • What wrongdoing is alleged (fraud, abuse, waste, mismanagement, violation of law, rule or regulation)?
  • When did the wrongdoing occur?
  • Where did the wrongdoing occur?
  • Who was involved?
  • What was the motivation for the alleged wrongdoing?
  • What harm was done?
  • Was anything done to remedy the wrongdoing?

You may also report these allegations anonymously to the college’s internal control officer using the methods listed below.
